Mohs Surgery

Mohs surgery, named after Frederick Mohs, is the most effective technique for treating skin cancer. Performed in an outpatient setting, Mohs surgery completely removes the cancerous area while preserving the surrounding healthy skin.

Mohs surgery is commonly used to remove large skin cancers, skin cancers in difficult-to-access areas, recurrent skin cancers, and those located in regions where preserving the surrounding skin is crucial (such as the tissue around the eyes and nose). This procedure is effective for basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas and may also be used for melanoma.

Our specially trained Mohs surgeon begins the procedure by numbing the affected area with local anesthesia. The cancerous growth is then removed in thin layers, a process that typically takes about five to ten minutes.

The Mohs surgeon then examines the layers under a microscope, a process that takes 30 to 45 minutes. Smaller, thinner layers are removed until a cancer-free layer is identified. Mohs surgery is completed in a single office visit and boasts a nearly 100% cure rate. Most patients experience little to no discomfort during or after the procedure.
